Eligibility

You may qualify for family reunification if you are:

  • spouse or registered partner of a Danish citizen or permanent resident.
  • child under 15 years old with a parent living in Denmark (exceptions may apply for children between 15-18 years old).
  • Another dependent family member, such as a parent or grandparent, who requires care from their Danish-based relative.

Special rules apply for:

  • Parents of Danish citizens who are minors.
  • Family members of EU/EEA or Swiss citizens applying under EU free movement rules.

Each application is reviewed individually, and additional requirements may apply based on personal circumstances.

Processing Time

  • The processing time depends on the applicant’s relationship with the Danish resident.
  • Family reunification for spouses/partners: Up to 7 months.
  • Family reunification for children: Varies depending on circumstances.

Documents Required

Application Documents

  • Completed and signed visa application form (ApplyVisa cover letter). Signature must match the passport.
  • Valid passport (original + copy of all pages). Passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended stay.
  • Proof of relationship with the family member in Denmark.

Documents for Spouse/Partner Reunification

For the Applicant (Spouse/Partner)

  • Marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation (translated into Danish or English).
  • Proof of previous cohabitation if the couple is not married.
  • Proof of work, education, or Danish language skills, depending on the integration requirements.
  • Copy of any Danish language certification (if applicable).

For the Spouse/Partner in Denmark

  • Proof of Danish citizenship, permanent residence, or refugee status.
  • Proof of meeting housing requirements (if applicable).
  • Proof of work, education, or Danish language skills (if applicable).
  • Proof of financial means (if required).

Documents for Child Reunification

For the Applicant (Child)

  • Birth certificate (translated into Danish or English).
  • Custody documentation (if only one parent is applying for reunification).
  • Proof of past contact with the parent in Denmark (if applicable).
  • Proof of serious illness or disability (if applicable).

For the Parent in Denmark

  • Proof of Danish citizenship, permanent residence, or refugee status.
  • Proof of meeting housing requirements (if applicable).

Additional Notes

  • Missing documents must be submitted within 5 calendar days of application submission.
  • Children over 15 years old may be considered for reunification in special cases.
  • Family reunification is not guaranteed if immigration authorities believe the applicant does not meet residency conditions.
  • It is strongly advised not to purchase flight tickets before visa approval unless specifically required under consulate agreements.
